Why Screen Printing Is Still the Best Option for Bulk T-Shirt Orders

Default Article

If you’re ordering custom t-shirts by the dozens or hundreds, you’ve probably noticed every print shop has an opinion about the “best” method. DTG looks great on a single shirt. DTF works on almost any fabric. But when the order size climbs into bulk territory, screen printing tends to win out — and for good reason.

What Makes Screen Printing Different

Screen printing works by pushing ink through a mesh stencil directly onto the fabric. Each color in your design gets its own screen, and the ink is applied layer by layer. It sounds simple, and in a lot of ways it is — but that simplicity is exactly why it holds up so well for large orders.

Once the screens are set up, printing shirt after shirt is fast. There’s no per-shirt digital rendering like you’d get with DTG, and no film transfer to cut and press individually like DTF. That speed translates directly into cost savings as your quantity goes up.

Why It Makes Sense for Bulk Orders

The math behind screen printing favors volume. The setup work — burning screens, mixing ink, dialing in registration — happens once. After that, the cost per shirt drops the more you print. A 12-shirt order and a 200-shirt order use the same screens, so the second one is far more efficient on a per-unit basis.

There’s also a durability factor worth mentioning. Screen-printed ink sits on top of the fabric in a way that tends to hold color and resist cracking over many wash cycles, especially with bold, solid-color designs like logos or text. If you’re outfitting a restaurant staff, a youth sports league, or a company event, that kind of wash durability matters more than it seems like it would on day one.

Screen printing also handles solid colors and clean lines exceptionally well. Logos, team names, and simple graphics print crisp and consistent across every shirt in the batch — which is the whole point when you need uniformity across 50 or 100 people.

Where It Has Limits

It’s not the right call for every design, and it’s not the right method for every garment either. Shops that offer custom embroidery t-shirt printing alongside screen printing can stitch logos onto polos or hats in the same order, which is usually the better finish for those pieces. As for the shirts themselves, highly detailed, photo-realistic, or gradient-heavy artwork tends to look better with a digital method, since each additional color in a screen-printed design adds setup time and cost.

The Bottom Line

For straightforward, solid-color designs printed in larger quantities, screen printing remains the most cost-effective and durable option available. It’s not the flashiest method, and it’s not meant for every job — but for bulk orders where consistency, cost, and longevity matter most, it’s still hard to beat.

If you’re planning a bulk order and aren’t sure whether your design is a good fit for screen printing, it’s worth getting a second opinion before committing to a method.
