The History and Tradition Behind the Hot Towel Shave

Default Article

Long before cartridge razors and electric trimmers, a shave was something you sat down for. The hot towel shave is one of the oldest rituals in men’s grooming, and the steps that define it today have barely changed in generations. Understanding where it came from makes it easy to see why it still has such a loyal following.

From Ancient Ritual to Modern Barbershop Classic

Shaving with a blade goes back thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians used razors made of copper and bronze, and in ancient Rome a visit to the tonsor — the barber — was part of daily life for many men. These early shops were places to catch up on news and gossip as much as places to get groomed, a social role barbershops still play today.

Through the Middle Ages, barbers took on even more. Known as barber-surgeons, they cut hair, shaved faces, pulled teeth, and even performed bloodletting, which is where the familiar red-and-white striped pole comes from. Over time, the medical work moved to physicians, and barbers returned to what they did best: cutting hair and keeping faces clean-shaven.

By the late 1800s and early 1900s, the barbershop shave had become a ritual of its own. A steaming towel softened the beard and opened the pores, a rich lather was worked in with a brush, and a straight razor did the rest in slow, careful passes. A cool towel and a splash of tonic finished the experience, and many men made it a weekly — or even daily — habit.

The arrival of the safety razor in the early twentieth century changed everything. Shaving moved into the bathroom, and the daily barbershop shave slowly faded. Beards and mustaches came and went with the fashions of each decade, but whenever they were in style, men returned to the barber for shaping — just as they do for a beard trim in Fort Lauderdale now.

In recent years, the hot towel shave has made a strong comeback. As more men look for grooming that feels personal rather than rushed, the classic straight-razor shave has found a new audience. It delivers a closer, smoother result than most home shaves, and the warm towels and unhurried pace make it one of the few truly relaxing appointments in a busy week.

The hot towel shave has survived thousands of years of changing styles and new technology for a simple reason: it works, and it feels great. If you’ve never experienced one, booking a traditional shave is the easiest way to connect with a grooming ritual that generations of men have trusted.
