Human Body Detectives

Human Body Detectives

Human Body Detectives “Battle with the Bugs” is the second activity workbook and audio CD in the Human Body Detectives series by Dr. Heather Manley.  The series highlights two girls’ adventures through the different body systems and teaches kids the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle.  Dr. Manley’s philosophy is that if children understand how their bodies work, they are more apt to make healthy food and lifestyle choices.  “Battle with the Bugs” is an engaging audio story that is sure to entertain any audience of kids, ages 7-12.

The audio story is quite entertaining, in part due to its very realistic sound effects.  When our five-year-old son listened to the story, he felt like he was actually in Baby Max’s nose stepping in green goo alongside Pearl and Merrin, the Human Body Detectives!  The story includes a balanced mix of scientific terminology and everyday language; the vocabulary is age-appropriate.  The length of the story is about 12 minutes, just long enough to maintain any listener’s interest.  Included on the CD, after the story, is the Human Body Detectives Theme Song;  it’s catchy and will make you want to get up and dance!  The words are in the back of the activity book.  We listened to the story as a whole family, and everyone, from age 3 on up, enjoyed it!  It’s entertaining for listeners of all ages.

The activity workbook begins with a  brief explanation of the immune system.  This is followed by a variety of activities related to the audio story, such as a word search, riddles, a code to crack, and word scrambles.  There is a glossary of pertinent terms and an answer key at the end of the book.  If your kids are like ours, they will love using the two pages of stickers included in the center of the workbook.

All of these activities are appropriate for either use at home or in the classroom.  Due to the academic nature of this product, teachers and parents would find it particularly useful in their classrooms or in their homeschool lessons.  They could easily use this story and the accompanying activities in a whole-group setting.  Kids ages 9 to 10 would be able to most successfully solve the  puzzles, riddles, and mystery in the workbook on their own.  Younger kids would need some help, and older children may not be challenged as much as those who are a little younger.

The real-life Human Body Detectives, Pearl and Merrin, invite readers to share comments with them via email; their addresses are available on various pages throughout the workbook.  Invite your kids to explore the body systems and be Human Body Detectives right along with Pearl and Merrin!

Kid Planet gives Human Body Detectives “Battle of the Bugs” a “Thumbs-Up” rating!
